Young and Sons has been building Cummins Diesel Engines in our Indianapolis facility for over 65 years. At our 60,000 square foot facility, our mechanics do all of the work on our Cummins engines in house. This family owned business keeps all of its work in one location, so there is no need for the middleman. The beauty of keeping our work all under one roof is that your questions can be answered by someone who was involved in building your Diesel Engine.
The Cummins 4BT is similar to the 5.9L 12v Cummins, but minus two cylinders. This 3.9L, 4 cylinder, inline Diesel was was a popular engine for commercial vans. Chevy Step Vans is one of the most popular vans that ehe 4BT was used in. They were also used in a wide range of construction and agricultural equipment. With the large amount of torque, these engines are commonly used for engine swaps in small trucks, SUV’s and jeeps.
– Cylinder head is made of cast iron
– Engine block head is made of cast iron
– Injection is direct injection, mechanical injection pump
– Weight is approximately 745 – 782 lbs
– Requires 10 quarts of oil
– 105 horsepower
– Torque is 265 lb-ft
The 4BT is shorter in length then the 6BT, but very similar in other ways. Parts of the engine, such as the injectors, pistons, connecting rods, and valvetrain design are designed and build right from the 12v Cummins. The 4BT is harsher then the 6BT because of the 4 cylinders. The 4BT 3.9 engine can be found in applications with up to a 16,000 lb GVWR.
