Diesel Engines FAQ

QUALITY AND TRUST FOR OVER 75 YEARS

In addition to the popular rebuilt CAT diesel engines, Cummins diesel engines, and Detroit Diesel engines, we stock and build almost every other make of diesel engine on the market! We also stock good running used engines and surplus new engines of many different makes!

Build time varies greatly from model to model. If we’ve got your engine on the shelf, we may only need a day to make small adjustments to meet the specifics of your serial number and application. If it’s a complete build from the core, it may take several weeks. Either way, we will let you know what to expect up front. We understand that down time means lost money for our customers. We will make every effort to limit that downtime and give you an honest time estimate you can plan on. With our facilities and large staff, Young and Sons is one of the fastest builders in the nation without ever sacrificing quality for speed.

No. We also stock new surplus engines and good running used engines with low miles.

Young and Sons follows a complex and detailed diesel engine rebuilding process. Our goal is to make each used or rebuilt diesel engine run like new.

First, we tear down the core engine to the bare block. We heat the tank and boil the block, crank, and all tin and cast parts to clean them completely. Once all of the diesel engine parts are clean, we begin inspecting for irregularities. We check the diesel engine’s block for cracks or other problems. We also inspect and machine the upper and lower counter bores to renew the cylinders. We then resurface the diesel engine’s cylinder block and line the bore block to standards and specification. As part of our diesel engine quality control process, we also tap all boltholes and repair as needed.

Finally, Young and Sons performs a complete rebuild of the diesel engine’s fuel system and pump. By replacing the rebuilt engine’s bearings reciprocating components, seals, gaskets, and more with new parts and installing new flexible fuel lines, fittings, and hard lines, the engine gets a huge boost to diesel performance.

While the company has grown from a small family garage to a thriving enterprise, Young and Sons is still proudly owned and operated by the Young family. Learn more about the story of Young and Sons here.
